The Story:
When I took the above photo of this presentable and well-kept bulk freighter anchored at Astoria, Oregon in June of 2008, I didn’t really think twice about her.
However, after reading some discussion over at Ships Nostalgia, a quite useful site for anyone with an interest in old ships, I found out that when I saw her, theis old girl was likely one of the oldest oceangoing bulk freighters sailing, with a good 30 years under her belt. Most only make it to two decades of service.
Therefore,, it saddened me to do a little research and discover her sale in 2009 to China at $205 a ton for scrap…
However, instead of weep for her, I’d rather celebrate her long, and evidently well cared for life, and may her memory live on, at least in a few hearts.
